History of the Domaine
The Domaine Maurice CHAPUIS is, above all, a family estate.
It was started around 1850 by Pierre PAVELOT a vineyard owner-worker in Aloxe-Corton who acquired 1 hectare of vines next to the main road (the RN 74).
A few years later, in association with his brother François, he bought another 0.6 hectares of "Charlemagne" that was planted with Aligoté.
Many years ago this vineyard formed part of the estate that Emperor CHARLEMAGNE left to the Chapitre Saint Andoche de Saulieu.
Pierre's daughter married a young teacher, Antoine CHAPUIS, who came to the village from Arconcey, in the Auxerre region. And while Antoine was passing on knowledge to the village children his parents-in-law and his wife looked after the small domaine.
Antoine had two sons, Eugène et Maurice, who took it upon themselves to work the family estate and make it prosper. They created, for example, "CHARLEMAGNE MOUSSEUX", a sparkling wine made from the Aligoté of the "Charlemagne" vineyard.
Eugène was killed in WW1 leaving Maurice to inherit a house and some other family vines. He enlarged the domaine by purchasing more plots of vineyards and fallow land from the Gauthey estate.
In 1936, just before harvest time, he also acquired a fine plot of "CORTON LES LANGUETTES".
Very much attached to the respect of the terroir, he was also very active in putting A.O.C legislation into place while maintaining his profession of "vigneron".
After the Second World War, his son Louis followed in his footsteps and began planting most of the fallow land with vines.
In his turn, his son, Maurice has run the domaine since 1985 after having studied English literature while learning wine making with his father and following continuous training.
For Maurice, the time spent in the vineyards or in the cellar also means constant evaluation of the reasons behind his work and the results
Despite having inherited a strong tradition, he doesn’t disregard science, as the wines are all analysed and double-checked by an oenologue. In this way he combines his efforts with modern technical backup to ensure that only the best results go into the bottle.
In 1990, Maurice married Anne-Marie, brought up in a military family… but also a wine lover!
Anne-Marie's management training has brought better organisational structure to the domaine along with better communications; new style presentations using desktop publishing are her trademark.
She has also had to learn a lot of new skills: Customs formalities, the special know-how of wine commerce and… naturally…giving in-depth tastings.
As if this were not enough she is also part of a committee responsible for organising events for the GJPV – an organisation of young winemakers. (Not to mention being mother to Pierre and Claire – the future of the Domaine?)
To sum up her philosophy we could say that Anne-Marie believes that winemaking is not a world apart – it should be a part of the world.
Together, Maurice and Anne-Marie have also created a wine-dealership, allowing clients to discover tastes from other villages and to share this dynamic couple's passion for wine.
